What is Taekkyon?

택견 T'aekkyŏn

Taekkyon (pronounce as « tech yawn » with a slight pause after tech) is a traditional bare hands martial art and folk game from Korea which was developed along the history of the peninsula and can therefore be considered the original form of all Korean bare  hands martial arts.

Although it is more oriented on attack than defense it is important in a Taekkyon game not to hurt the opponent. Therefore hits are usually done in a pushing, pressing manner more aimed at breaking the balance and making the opponent fall than at hurting him.

The main techniques are made of kicks, throws, sweeps, grabs, pushes using many parts of the body:  feet, legs, hands, arms…  Techniques using hits with harder parts of the body  such as elbows, knees, fists exist but are forbidden in competition.

Other spellings also exist: Taekgyeon, Taekkyeon, Taekyon, Taekyun and even Taekkyun.
